How to identify it

  • Large, 55 to 65 cm, brownish-black.
  • Yellow cheek patch and yellow panels in the tail.
  • Slow, heavy flapping flight and a long, wailing call.

Where it lives

Moves through the canopy, feeding on seed and wood-boring grubs.

When to look

Passes through in loose flocks; listen for the wailing call.

Status at Skye

Vulnerable in South Australia. Recorded in the area.
