Three-cornered Garlic

Allium triquetrum
Declared ยท dominant

A smothering bulb weed that blankets the ground layer through winter and spring.

Three-cornered Garlic, Allium triquetrum, at Skye Sanctuary

How to identify it

  • White bell flowers with a green stripe, drooping from a three-sided (triangular) stem.
  • Strappy leaves, onion or garlic smell when crushed.

Why it is a problem

Carpets the ground almost everywhere on the block, smothering native seedlings and grasses. It spreads by bulbs and by seed, so digging that leaves bulblets behind just multiplies it.

How to control it

Dig out carefully with the whole bulb before flowering, and bag every bulb (do not compost). For dense stands, spot spray while in active growth. Expect several years of follow-up. Declared, so control is required.

Where it is at Skye

Dominant across the ground layer.

Status at Skye

Declared weed, dominant on Mount Skye.
