Sweet Pittosporum

Pittosporum undulatum
Priority woody weed

A shade-casting small tree that shuts out the understorey. A priority for removal.

Photo coming

How to identify it

  • Small tree with glossy, wavy-edged (undulate) leaves.
  • Cream, sweetly scented flowers, then sticky orange fruit.

Why it is a problem

Casts heavy shade that shuts out the native understorey, and fruits heavily so birds spread it into bushland. Native to eastern Australia but a serious environmental weed here.

How to control it

Hand-pull seedlings. Cut-and-swab or stem-inject established trees, then follow up on the seedling flush. Remove before fruiting where possible.

Where it is at Skye

Recorded on the slope in both September surveys.

Status at Skye

Priority woody weed on Mount Skye. Confirmed at Research Grade in the 28 September survey.
