Southern Brown Bandicoot

Isoodon obesulus obesulus
EPBC Endangered ยท nearbyIllustration

Nationally endangered, and the species we most want the corridor to bring back. Not on the land yet.

Illustration, not a photograph. A real photo will replace it once we have one.

How to identify it

  • Rabbit-sized: head-body 28 to 36 cm, short tail, about 0.5 to 1.5 kg.
  • Stocky, coarse greyish-brown fur, a long tapering snout and short rounded ears.
  • Nocturnal and shy. You will usually find its sign before the animal.

Where it lives

Needs dense native ground cover to shelter in. Its nearest record is close by.

When to look

Nocturnal. Watch for neat, conical, snout-width diggings in soft soil.

Status at Skye

Not yet on Mount Skye. The trail-camera program targets it, and rebuilding the ground layer is what would let it return.
