How to identify it

  • Very small, about 9 to 10 cm.
  • Males glossy blue-black above with a bright red throat and undertail.
  • Feeds on mistletoe berries and spreads the seed.

Where it lives

In the canopy where mistletoe grows.

When to look

Present through the year; a high, thin call.

Status at Skye

Recorded on Mount Skye, 26 August 2026 (a pair photographed).
