Mediterranean Buckthorn

Rhamnus alaternus
Environmental weed

A tough evergreen shrub that spreads into bushland and holds ground the natives need.

How to identify it

  • Evergreen shrub to small tree with glossy oval leaves, finely toothed.
  • Small yellow-green flowers, then red berries turning black.

Why it is a problem

Bird-spread berries let it invade bushland, where it forms dense stands that outcompete native shrubs and hold ground the understorey needs.

How to control it

Hand-pull seedlings. Cut-and-swab or stem-inject larger plants, and follow up on regrowth and seedlings. Remove before the berries ripen.

Where it is at Skye

Present on the edges and through the slope.

Status at Skye

Environmental weed on Mount Skye.
