Mat-rush and rock outcrop

Lomandra sp.
Skink habitat

Mat-rushes and lichen-covered rock. This is the exact structure Cunningham's Skink depends on.

Mat-rush and rock outcrop, Lomandra sp., at Skye Sanctuary

How to identify it

  • Tough, strappy, grass-like tussocks (Lomandra), often on and around rock.
  • Lichen-covered granite or schist outcrops with crevices.

Where it lives

On the eastern-facing slopes. The rock crevices are refuge and basking habitat for Cunningham's Skink, so the rock is never removed.

When to look

Present year round.

See Cunningham's Skink, the endangered lizard this habitat supports.

Status at Skye

Recorded on Mount Skye in both September surveys.
