What this slope was before, what changed it, and where the weeds came from.
It answers one question: what this slope was before, what changed it, and where the weeds came from.
Each button is a period. Clicking one switches on the aerial photograph for that period and switches the others off, and dims anything that did not exist yet. Start at Before 1836 and work right to watch the slope change.
Some periods have no photograph yet. Those say so, and name the frame we are chasing.
The cream dots are places a photographer stood. Click the dot and the photograph opens in this panel, with its date, who took it and a link to the State Library record.
The shaded cone is which way the camera looked. A dashed ring instead means we have the position but never established the direction.
These photographs show country that had already been grazed and cleared. They are not the original bush, and should never be captioned as it.
Every layer has a Fade slider. The usual move is to switch on an old aerial, then fade the current satellite underneath it up and down. Turning on the street map gives you road names to anchor on.
It shows what we have been able to find so far and it grows as more arrives. Where a period has no aerial photograph, the map says so and names the frame we are chasing rather than leaving a blank. Imagery for the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s has been located and requested.
The historic aerials will not line up perfectly, and no amount of shifting will fix it. They are raw photographs, not corrected imagery. On ground this steep the land nearer the camera is pushed outward in the frame, so lining one street up throws another out. Corrected imagery has been requested.
Nothing on this map is surveyed. Every position is derived, and the map says how confident it is wherever that matters.

Do not caption any photograph as the original bush. They show country that had already been grazed and cleared. The correct wording is of the form “The Magill hills face, about 1875”.
